The Synergy Regulation System

A clear system for helping children move through escalation and return to regulation.

The Synergy Regulation System combines emotional regulation and executive function into one structured system made up of three core components that parents and professionals can use in real-life situations.

1
Regulation Cycle
2
Escalation Model
3
Reset Protocol
What This System Does

Children don’t struggle because they won’t regulate—
they struggle because they don’t yet have the capacity.

  • Recognize
    when escalation begins
  • Respond
    earlier and more effectively
  • Build
    regulation and thinking skills
  • Return
    to baseline faster
  • Develop
    independence over time

The Regulation Cycle

Regulation is not a straight line—it’s a cycle. Children move through predictable phases:

1
Activation begins
2
Escalation increases
3
Support is required
4
Recovery occurs
5
Regulation is restored

The goal is not to prevent escalation, but to support successful movement through it.

The Escalation Model

The Escalation Model explains how regulation develops over time and how support must change as children grow. It is not just about behavior—it is about who is responsible for regulation in the moment. Regulation develops through structured, age-based support rooted in nervous system development.

Early Childhood

Ages 3–5

Primarily parent-guided.

  • Sensory understanding
  • Emotional labeling
  • Predictable regulation routines
  • Co-regulation sequencing

Children at this stage require adult scaffolding. The focus is strengthening foundational regulation skills within the home.

Elementary

Ages 6–10

Balanced child engagement + parent integration.

  • Frustration tolerance
  • Impulse control
  • Executive functioning
  • Structured recovery routines

Children begin practicing independent regulation while parents reinforce structure and consistency.

Pre-Adolescent

Ages 11–13

Strategy-building + emotional intensity management.

  • Social regulation
  • Emotional processing
  • Executive planning
  • Recovery without avoidance

Sessions integrate reflection, discussion, and practical skill application.

Adolescent

Ages 14–17

Autonomy + independent regulation.

  • Stress tolerance
  • Executive planning
  • Identity-based coping
  • Self-directed recovery

Sessions emphasize collaboration and real-life integration.

This progression ensures that expectations match developmental capacity, reducing escalation while building independence.

The Synergy Reset Protocol™

The Synergy Reset Protocol™ is designed to help children and families strengthen emotional regulation and executive functioning in real-life situations.

This is not behavior management. This is skill-building.

Children are not born knowing how to regulate their emotions. Regulation is learned through experience, co-regulation, and repetition.

The protocol provides a clear, repeatable structure that families can use both during sessions and at home.

01

ACTIVATE™

Activation is intentional engagement of the nervous system. Children often move quickly into overwhelm because their bodies do not yet recognize rising stress signals. In this phase, we safely and purposefully activate the body and brain through structured movement, sensory input, and focused engagement.

  • Builds awareness of internal states
  • Helps children recognize rising stress signals
  • Strengthens tolerance for activation
02

INTEGRATE™

Integration is where skill-building happens. This phase focuses on executive functioning and emotional processing while the nervous system is engaged but supported.

  • Transition tolerance
  • Task initiation and follow-through
  • Flexible thinking
  • Recovery after frustration

Instead of shutting down or escalating quickly when something feels difficult, children practice staying with the challenge in a supported way.

03

RESTORE™

Restore is not simply calming down. Restore is practicing recovery. Children learn how to shift their nervous system intentionally after effort, frustration, or activation.

  • Emotional recovery
  • State shifting
  • Self-regulation
  • Co-regulation skills

Over time, children learn: They can recover. They can reset.

How to achieve a regulated Foundation

All three core components are supported by a developmental shift:

Developmental Shift
Co-Regulation → Self-Regulation

Children first borrow regulation from adults before they can regulate independently.

Why This Works

Most approaches focus only on behavior.

This system focuses on:

  • Regulation capacity
  • Nervous system support
  • Executive function development

Because behavior improves when regulation improves.

The Outcome
  • Notice escalation earlier
  • Pause and reset
  • Think more flexibly
  • Recover more quickly
  • Function more independently

This is not behavior management. This is building regulation capacity for real life.

Why This Matters

When a child feels overwhelmed, the entire home feels it. Regulation is not a quick fix. It is a capacity built over time.

The Synergy Regulation System provides a structured, sustainable way to strengthen that capacity — for children and for families.
